Building Envelope: Conserve with Energy Efficient Insulation and Air Sealing

Envinity helps businesses and municipalities across Pennsylvania conserve energy by inspecting for air leakage and heat loss, and providing guidance on how to make improvements. The windows, doors, insulation, roof, and facade together make up the barrier to the outdoor environment and are collectively known as the building envelope.  The most common building envelope improvement is air sealing to stop movement of air drafts and moisture.  This is accomplished with expanding spray foam insulation, caulk, seals, and sheeting.  Other envelope improvements include:

  • Low emissivity windows
  • Insulated doors
  • Cellulose, fiberglass, or board insulation

Envelope improvements decrease heating and cooling load due to unwanted outdoor air entering the building. The unwanted outdoor air can account for 20-40% of the heating and cooling load in a building. By improving the envelope, the capital cost of new heating and cooling equipment can be reduced because the equipment literally does not need to be as large.
