Timber Frame Building | Post and Beam Construction
Timber framing is a traditional method of constructing a building using large wooden posts, beams, and diagonal knee braces. In timber frame construction, pieces are fitted together and secured with wooden pegs to make a sustainable green building. The timbers are larger than would normally be found in a typical “stick-framed” building, and are usually fully exposed to the interior of the finished home.
As expert and experienced timber frame builders, Envinitiy's first choice of material for timber framing is locally available species such as Eastern Hemlock, White Pine, and Red or White Oak. Pennsylvania’s forests provide these and other choices of lumber that we can use without extensive transportation or processing, decreasing the overall carbon footprint of your timber frame house.
Timber frame homes allow the natural beauty and strength of the structure to be visible in the living space. The look of the frame can vary from refined to rustic, traditional to contemporary, depending on your preferences. Regardless of the style, the craftsmanship becomes a focal point of the home, providing an honest element of strength and beauty.
Timber frame homes enclosed with SIPs (structural insulated panels) are more energy efficient and durable than log buildings. The foam core of the SIPs is a better insulator than the solid wood walls of a log home, and the structure of a timber frame is protected from the elements instead of being exposed to the weather as in log construction.
If the hearth is the heart of the home, then the timber frame must be the soul. When the frame is raised—usually a relatively quick process—the home springs to life, its shape defined by large, solid timbers that evoke a sense of permanence.
