Some of our projects are really hybrids of traditional and alternative methods. For instance, straw bale construction originated over a hundred years ago, and is currently being revived throughout the U.S. and around the world. The ENERGY STAR home we designed and built is part straw bale and timber frame. We devote considerable time and attention to researching and specifying non-toxic and low embodied energy products. We often try to incorporate recycled materials into our projects. Whenever possible, we use locally or regionally sourced materials. Some local materials include hemlock siding, black locust for deck boards and pine timbers for timberframes. We also use a variety of native hardwood species including red oak, hickory, maple and cherry in our flooring, cabinetry and trim.
